TOMOKA HIGUCHI

I was born and raised in Tokyo, and my life and career have always had an international dimension. I spent three of my formative years in the United States and, after graduating from university in Tokyo, returned to the U.S. for graduate studies. I went on to spend nearly a decade in San Francisco and New York, experiences that shaped both my professional outlook and the way I see the world.

At Stanford University Graduate School of Education, I studied the management and development of educational institutions. After graduate school, I took an unconventional path, working in both the finance and technology sectors in the U.S. before ultimately returning to my original passion for education.

 

That led me to become one of the founding members behind the creation of an international residential high school in Karuizawa, now known as UWC ISAK Japan. I was involved from its earliest stages, helping develop the concept and launch its first prototype summer school.

 

In 2014, I returned to Tokyo and joined Open Road Associates, Inc. as Chief Operating Officer. Today, I oversee Broadway Dance Center Tokyo (BDC), a dance institution with more than 40 years of history in professional dance education, while also producing performances and developing projects that connect artists and audiences in Japan and internationally.

 

In 2016, we launched BDC PILATES, one of Japan’s pioneers in machine-based Pilates. What began as a new venture has since grown into a multi-location studio and education business, extending our long-standing expertise in movement and body education beyond the world of professional dance.

 

My work has continued to expand internationally and across disciplines. In addition to producing and supporting performing arts projects, I am involved in investment in stage productions created in the UK and the U.S., and provide interpretation and translation that help bridge Japanese and international creative communities. In London, I serve as an advisor to an adult ballet program Everybody Ballet held weekly at the Royal Opera House.

Looking back, my career has moved through education, finance, technology, dance, wellness, and the performing arts. While these fields may seem very different, the common thread for me has always been people: creating environments  and building platforms where talent can develop, ideas can cross borders, and creative people can build something meaningful and sustainable.

I danced ballet and jazz dance growing up. Dance was always a powerful tool for me to build friendships and be part of communities around the world. I believe dance is one of the most powerful and versatile international languages. 

Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, theater and musicals, Pilates, ballet, golf, and wine.

東京生まれ。幼少期を日本とアメリカで過ごし、東京の大学を卒業後、大学院留学のため再び渡米。2004年から約10年間、サンフランシスコとニューヨークを拠点に生活しました。

​

スタンフォード大学教育大学院では、教育機関の経営やマネジメントについて学びました。卒業後は、シリコンバレーのヘッジファンド、ニューヨークのIT企業での勤務を経験。ビジネスの世界で働く一方で、改めて「教育」という分野に向き合いたいと考えるようになり、教育事業の世界へ戻ることを決意しました。

大学院の友人たちと、軽井沢に日本初の全寮制インターナショナルハイスクールをつくるプロジェクトを発足、立ち上げ初期メンバーとして参画。現在のUWC ISAK JAPANにつながる学校構想の立案から、最初のプロトタイプとなるサマースクールの立ち上げまで携わりました。

2014年に日本へ本帰国し、オープンロードアソシエイツ株式会社の執行役員に就任。1984年の創立以来40年以上にわたりプロフェッショナルダンサーを育成してきたBroadway Dance Center（BDC）の運営と、公演・舞台作品の企画制作を担っています。

​​

2016年には、マシンピラティス専門スタジオ「BDC PILATES」を発案・立ち上げ。ダンス教育で培ってきた身体への知見を、より多くの人の健康や日常へと広げる事業として、スタジオ運営から人材育成まで幅広く携わっています。

​​

イギリスやアメリカで製作される舞台作品への出資や、海外のアーティストやクリエイターとの仕事における通訳・翻訳など、国境を越えた舞台芸術のプロジェクトにも関わっています。​また英国ロンドンでは、ロイヤルオペラハウスで行われる大人向けバレエ教室「Everybody Ballet」のアドバイザーを務めています。

人の才能や可能性が育つ「場」をつくること、そして、異なる文化や人をつなぎ、新しいものが生まれるきっかけをつくることが原動力です。​​幼い頃から、バレエ、ジャズダンスを踊り、ブロードウェイミュージカルが大好き。ダンスは最強の国際言語であるという信念のもと、今も舞台鑑賞は生活の大切な一部です。

プライベートでは、旅行、ピラティス、バレエ、ゴルフ、ワインを楽しみながら、仕事でもプライベートでも、知らない土地や人、文化、新しいアイデアに出会うことを大切にしています。
